The Ride

Each day a punishing average of 150 kilometres will be rode, which is Tour De France distances, in some of the remotest places in South Australia.

Riding from Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Port Pirie, Renmark and finishing in Adelaide, the 5 Towns tour will pass through some of the most beautiful and hopefully not too hilly or windy parts of South Australia.

A support crew will be on hand for safety measures, so please slow down for the convoy, it will only hold you up for a few moments. And they will do their best to help you make a safe pass to be on your way. Aside from that, Kimon Lycos is a delicate soul and is allergic to gravel rash, he’ll whinge about it forever!

What it takes

Kimon will be burning approximately 1,121 calories per hour, placing stress on the performance of major muscle groups, aerobic capacity and his lycra. Don’t forget, Kimon is not exactly an elite cyclist or elite anything for that matter! So he needs a bit of extra help.

Here is what does the trick.

The essential equipment

Skins™ performance gear
Skins™ cycle incorporates Skins™ proven BioAcceleration Technology™ to provide increased performance on the bike. Used during training and for 5Towns, the performance of Skins™ to apply just the right amount of engineered gradient compression to the muscles, ensures the scientifically proven circulatory benefits of Skins™ BioAcceleration makes the ride and recovery easier.

Skins

Lightweight road bike
Where speed and responsiveness are paramount, a carbon road bike delivers performance.

Ride preparation

Pasta for carbohydrates
Pasta is high in complex carbohydrates, which provide a "time release" of energy rather than a quick boost. Most athletes include complex carbohydrates in their diet to save up the energy in their body. The carbohydrates become glucose stored in the muscles. The glucose energy is then released when needed during long, tiring exercise such as riding a bike over 700 km’s.

During the ride

Sports drink for hydration and protection from cramps and fatigue
Designed to help athletes rehydrate, as well as replenish electrolytes , carbohydrates, and other nutrients, which can be depleted after training or competition. Electrolyte replacement promotes proper rehydration, which is important in delaying the onset of fatigue during exercise. As the primary fuel utilized by exercising muscle, carbohydrates are important in maintaining exercise and sport performance.

Sportblock 30+
Quality sportblock should be a light, non-greasy sunscreen that provides very high protection. Specially formulated for the sports person or the outdoor enthusiast whose activities lead to prolonged exposure to UV radiation.

Ride recovery

High Protein Milk Drinks
Contain 30g of premium quality protein in a handy ready to drink pack, ideal immediately after exercise to assist your body to take in the protein it needs to recover and maintain muscle.
